Entering freshman are admitted to the Department of Art as BS candidates by meeting the Utah State University admission requirements and by submitting a portfolio for review by the art department. Entrance to the BFA program in studio art is accomplished by formal application after completion of the department's Foundation courses. Students applying for this degree program should have a GPA of at least 2.75. Application to the BFA program is done by portfolio review and should be made during the Spring semester in which the prerequisites will be completed. Transfer students should make application during Spring semester for entrance prior to their entrance to USU. Participation in the BA program in Art History is limited to students with at least a 2.5 GPA.
Students who have applied for admissions to Utah State University and wish to major in art must make a separate application directly to the art department. To be considered for acceptance as an art major you must submit the following materials, to be received in the art office by FEBRUARY 1:
1. CD of ten digital images (.JPEG format) of your best art work completed within the last two years. Title and number individual pieces as follows: number, first initial, underscore, last name. For example: 01R_Jensen.jpg, 02R_Jensen.jpg, etc. Individual images must not exceed maximum dimensions of 1024 x 768 pixels, (72dpi). Digital files will be projected for faculty evaluation. We recommend that you represent your highest quality work produced in any discipline including: drawing, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture. Only digital images will be accepted; do not send actual artwork.
2. Numbered list of works that includes the title, date completed, dimensions and artistic medium. Numbers must correspond to images included on CD.
3. A one to two page letter of application. This letter should address your background in the visual arts and state your objectives for pursuing a degree in art. You should include your current strengths and interests, your aspirations for a career related to the visual arts and highlight any awards or accomplishments in art.
4. A current transcript of your grades with your cumulative grade point average, hours completed and art classes clearly identified.
5. A copy of your ACT or SAT scores.
6. A self-addressed postage paid 10x13 envelope for the return of your materials.
**Remember, you must apply for admissions to Utah State University and meet Utah State University admission standards before you can be accepted as an art major. The Department of Art will accept approximately 40 students receiving the highest evaluations from the art faculty. From these accepted students, the top ranked individuals will be awarded FRESHMAN ART SCHOLARSHIPS.
